Bury

Celebrate 120 Years - Fill The Ground!

19-Mar-2005

Bury FC is 120 years old this year and aims to celebrate the occasion at the Good Friday game against Grimsby Town by getting 100 fans to turn up for every year of the club's existence.

Falling attendances have put severe financial pressure on the club leading to two winding up orders being served on them in early 2005. These have been successfully fought off but if attendances don't rise whilst the club is subject to the CVA the future looks very bleak.

Long gone are the days when regular attendances topped 10,000 and the rebuilt ground now has an all-seater capacity of 12,000 which, since its redevelopment has never been full. When the fans helped haul the club out of administration in 2002 it was hoped the groundswell of support around the town would lead to an upturn in the crowds but, sadly, the reverse has happened resulting in the current situation.

Bury Fc was formed way back in 1885 and for 120 years football has been played at their famous Gigg Lane ground. There have been many outstanding players, exciting matches and loyal supporters. People say they care about small, friendly clubs like Bury and now they have the opportunity to show how much they care by coming along for the special celebration match on Good Friday 25th March kick off 3.00pm. when Bury play Grimsby Town in a Coca-Cola League Two game.

With almost no other football being played that day, we are asking the townspeople and businesses of Bury and the supporters of other clubs to get behind Bury's initiative to 'fill the ground', bring along friends, family, work colleagues - in fact anyone you can!

Tickets are available and admission will be at the special price of:
£10 Adults & £2 Children and OAP's for tickets purchased before the day of the game. (Normal matchday prices apply on the the day)

In addition the club is offering special prizes to both the individual and the business or organisation that sells most tickets.

Each will receive - A meal for two at the England v Northern Ireland World Cup Qualifying Game at Old Trafford on Saturday 26th March plus an England shirt signed by England star and keen Bury fan Gary Neville.

Forever Bury are inviting England fans that are travelling to the game in Manchester a day or two early to order their tickets for the Bury game and come and show your support.

Any fans planning to come to the Good Friday game can call in at the Forever Bury office/Visitors Centre and sign our visitors book to show your support for football clubs in general and the way fans are working together to keep a strong and vibrant league structure.

If you're coming to the game and you've got any tins or jars full of loose change we have a scheme running whereby we are trying to cover our Gigg Lane pitch in pennies (theoretically) and we have a schematic layout of the pitch, divided into 500 squares, on our website www.foreverbury.co.uk . The scheme isn't reliant on just coppers being handed in, each square represents £320.00, so we'd be delighted if anyone wants to sponsor a square. Call in at the Forever Bury Office for a chat.

Let's all work together to 'Fill The Ground'!!!!!

Shakers facing new money worries
30-Dec-2004

(from the BBC)

Bury are facing a new cash crisis just three years after coming out of administration, reports BBC GMR.

The club have called in former director Neville Neville to look at how to improve the club's cash-flow problems.

Bury are paying crippling credit charges of £10,000 a month from their last financial plight when they almost went out of existence.

Smaller crowds are being blamed on the latest money worries and the Shakers have appealed for new investment.

Saved at last
(31-May-2002)

Bury have issued the following press release:-
Bury have been brought out of administration after an agreement was reached with their unsecured creditors.
The Shakers have signed a four-year Creditors' Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) with their creditors which will see the club paying 10p in the pound of the unsecured debts they owe.
The agreement enables the transfer of the club to the 'Save Our Shakers Trust', a fans group initially set up to raise funds to see Bury through to the end of last season.
The club's future at their Gigg Lane ground has also been secured thanks to an annonymous benefactor who paid the £500,000 needed to secure the mortgage.
Matt Dunham, partner of RSM Robson Rhodes, the club's joint
administrators, sees the move as a historic day for Bury. He said: 'This represents a potential way forward for clubs to deal with current cashflow crises, the failure of ITV Digital and the general financial uncertainty that many clubs face.
'By selling the club to the supporters it enables it to become an integral part of the local community and allows supporters to direct the future of the club.
'This solution could well provide the basis for other clubs to deal with the cashflow difficulties they are currently facing.
'However, without the hard work of the supporters and their fund-raising efforts the sale could not have been achieved and it is probable that the club would by now be closed. It is a tremendous result.'
The fans group will now control all of the day-to-day running of Bury as they prepare for life in Division Three.

Bury have put their entire squad up for sale in an attempt to raise cash and avoid going bust.
Co-chairman Fred Mason has said even though £200,000 had been raised in 12 days, the balance may have to come from the sale of one or more of the club's players. The club still needs a further £400,000 by the end of the season.
He said: 'Every player has his price. It's no different to any other club of our size and in our predicament. 'It will be a miracle if we don't have to sell a player.'

Bury have been given a further six weeks in which to save
the club
The High Court sitting in Manchester today extended the club's administration period to April 26 after their administrators were able to prove the club had enough cash to take them to the end of the season.
The decision means that the club now has six weeks to negotiate with any interested parties in an effort to secure the club's long-term future.

Reported on the rivals website
Bury FC have launched a unique fund raising scheme that is open to fans of all clubs, the challenge form Bury FC is to all clubs to come and do their bit for the Shakers.
Fans of all clubs can buy seats at Gigg Lane. The club which buys the most seats will win some special.
Okay fans of all you other clubs; here's your challenge. Buy some seats (the cost is 10 pounds per seat, though you may offer more if you like) and help save the Shakers. The club which sells the most seats will win a prize as follows:
50 Fans from the winning Club will be invited to a Bury Match (next season) they will be given a tour of the ground, a pre match meal and they will be thanked on the pitch at 1/2 time and also do the 1/2 time draw.
Of course, all fans who enter the competition will also be entered into the prize draw, which will see the winner receive 10% of the total fund - so if we sell all 12,000 seats, the winner of the draw would get 12 grand, just like that - now there's an incentive ... and your chance of winning is far higher than playing the pools or the National Lottery!
Come on fans, do your bit, buy a piece of Gigg Lane, and we'll love you for ever ...
We will do our best to get an updated league table online every day (on rivals site) showing how the clubs are doing - that way you can see how your club is faring and get the numbers boosted!!
Also for the attention of Bury and Oldham fans who are interested, there will be 2 (at least) stands set up at the Ground where people can 'buy' their seats on Tues night during the game against Oldham.
In brief, you can buy seats by calling Bury FC on 0161 764 4881 or by 0161 705 2144. Credit card details will be accepted over the phone.
You can also send cheques to:
BUY A SEAT, BURY FOOTBALL CLUB, GIGG LANE, BURY, BL9 9HR
