Prescott Gives OK To stadium

21-Jan-2005

Colchester's community stadium has taken a major step forward - and work on it may start next year.

from Essex Evening Gazette:

There had been fears the plan for the 10,000-seat stadium would face months of delays by the project being scrutinised by the Government.

But the plans will not be called in by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

Colchester Council has been told Mr Prescott's office is happy with the regeneration scheme of north Colchester and Cuckoo Farm, letting the project to move forward. It could mean a planning application for the stadium is handed in this autumn, with work starting early next year.

A meeting was held on Tuesday, January 19 with Colchester Council, Colchester United Football Club and Colchester United Community Sports Trust where the funding of the project was agreed in principle.

Colchester United has been working with advisers and developers to come up with a project plan

The £12.7 million project will include a 10,000-seat stadium, 660-space car park, two five-a-side artificial surface pitches and a suite of offices for the sports trust.

The stadium, which has been designed to allow it to expand to 18,000 seats, will include meeting rooms, banqueting and catering facilities to ensure it is generating income seven days a week.

Robert Davidson, regeneration and partnerships portfolio holder for Colchester Council, said: 'If everything falls into place, it could be open as early as spring 2007.'

'All the partners are keen to see it happen. It is an exciting time for everybody involved. If everything falls into place, it could be open as early as spring 2007.'

Darren Barrenger, chairman of the CUCST, said: 'The two artificial pitches provided as part of the initial build is great news for us and we are very pleased.'
